About Jesus Steve Sweetman Chapter 26 The
Second Census (ch. 26:1 - 65) In
verses 1 to 3 God told Moses to make a census.
Moses was to build an army for Israel. He was to count every man
over the age of twenty who was able to fight in the Israeli military.
Obviously, there would be battles to fight when enteringCanaan
and Israel
needed to be prepared. We
see here that God is involved in an army.
We do need to note however, that this army is to defend His
people. God's dealing with
sinful man is what has got Him involved in such things as an army.
If we were not so sinful, He would not have to be involved in
either war or preparing an army. I'm
not convinced that God is real excited about building an army, but it is
something that He has to clearly do.
From
verses 4 to 51 we see the names of men in this army.
I will not comment on these names. In
verses 52 to 56 God gives Moses another command.
Once I
said that only eleven out of the twelve tribes would have a plot of
land. The Levites, the tribe
of priests would not have any land.
They would be scattered throughout the land.
The eleven tribes were given land for their inheritance.
The Lord God Himself was considered to be the inheritance of the
tribe of Levi. We
note that from verse 64 to the end of this chapter that those counted in
this census were all over twenty years of age and none included men in
the first census that took place a number of years back while in the
desert. So we do see God's
word being fulfilled here, as the text says.
God said that none of the Israelis who had sinned earlier would
enter the land
