People Are Like Cats

Some people believe that we evolved from monkeys.  The way some of us behave, I can certainly understand their reasoning, but if you ask me, I think we have evolved from cats.

I have had one dog for a pet and one cat for a pet in my seventy-one year life.  If there is anything that I have learned from my two precious buddies, it is this.  A dog is certainly not a cat.  A cat is definitely not a dog, and, people are like cats.  Yes, both people and cats have a mind of their own.  With having a mind of our own in mind, read Romans 12:2.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Paul told us that our minds need a transformation, a metamorphosis, as the Greek text puts it.  This implies that we do actually have a mind of our own that has been influenced by our cultural environment more than we are willing to admit.  That being the case, there is hope for such a mental metamorphosis in our lives.  2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that Christians have become a brand new creation of people, and that is due to the Holy Spirit's residency within Christians.  Here is the Christian Standard Bible's rendering of that verse.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!"

As a Christian, I have become a brand new person, yet I still live in my old earthly body.  Despite this reality, I have the God-given, inherent ability, through the Holy Spirit, to undergo a mental metamorphosis.  Guided by the Holy Spirit and diligent Bible study, little by little, this transformation takes place.  So, as cute as your little furry friend is, don't be like him.  Be like the one Jesus has made you to be.

By the way, I don't really believe we evolved from cats, despite some similarities we have with them.  Also, the event that proved to me that a cat is not a dog is when, at the top of the stairs, our cute little kitten would not move for me.  I ended up tripping over him and falling down the stairs.  Our dog, Jesse, would have moved out of the way for me, but our cat, Timmy, figured I should be the one moving, not him.
