About Jesus Steve Sweetman Why
Watch And Pray? A
pastor friend used to say that those who spend time thinking and
studying end time events are too heavenly minded to be of any earthly
good. He thought it was a
waste of time thinking about these things when there was so much work to
be done right now in the As
Christians, we should want to obey Jesus.
Well, Mark 13:33 gives us something to obey.
Jesus tells us to "watch and pray".
The context of this command concerns the end of this age and His
return. These words make it
clear. We are to concern
ourselves with Jesus' return and the events leading to His return.
Watching
means being awake. It means
paying attention to the things that are happening in the world around
us. Our eyes should be wide
open to world events and how they relate to Biblical prophecy.
I suggest my pastor friend completely missed the point on this
issue. While
we watch the world around us, Jesus tells us to pray.
We pray as earnestly as we can for those who don't know Jesus.
We pray for strength to represent Jesus in a world that is
becoming increasingly hostile towards His followers.
We pray for the ability to properly understand the signs of our
times. We pray in order to
maintain a close relationship with Jesus, especially in the turbulent
days to come. We certainly
don't want to be caught napping at this late stage.
We've got too many Christians napping as it is. I
suggest we all obey our Lord Jesus, and watch for the fulfillment of His
prophetic words. Our
redemption is near. At the
same time, let's pray even more fervently than ever.
There's so much to pray about.
